Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila visited Israel to meet Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday (4/25). Dancila's two-day trip came
days after the leader of the ruling left-wing Social Democratic Party (PSD),
Liviu Dragnea, announced the government's "decision" on the transfer
of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The move was carried out by Bucharest following the controversial US
President Donald Trump's decision in early December that decided to recognize
Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Romania is also one of 35 countries that abstained from voting on United Nations General Assembly resolutions which rejected Trump's decision at an Emergency Meeting on 21 December. Netanyahu also called Romanian President Kalus Lohannis to thank him for his position.
Romania is the only former communist bloc country that still maintains its relations with Israel after the Six Day War broke out in 1967. In contrast, former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu maintained close ties with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) while still headed by Yasser Arafat.
Reported by AFP, Dancila's visit to Israel began with a lunch with Netanyahu. After that, Israeli officials said the two leaders would visit Yad Vashem's Holocaust memorial monument.
The next day, Dancila is scheduled to visit the Wailing Wall or the Western Wall and meet Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.
Meanwhile, Romanian local media reported Netanyahu had also invited Dragnea, the ruling party leader, to visit Israel. Netanyahu was also said to welcome Dragnea's statement about embassy relocation.

Even so, Romania's decision regarding the transfer of the embassy is still
a debate in the country. Romanian President Callus Lohannis protested the
government's decision.
The liberal right politician considers him not involved in decision making by the government.
Lohannis also considered the transfer of the embassy could be done after Israel and Palestine had agreed on the status of the City of Jerusalem.
Despite losing the 2016 election and failing to win the prime minister's seat, Dragnea still has a role in government affairs.
Avoiding debate, Dancila later confirmed that he was only trying to create a "platform for discussion" regarding the possibility of relocating his embassy in Israel.
